Château Talbot is one of the most beloved and storied Fourth Growths of Saint-Julien, named after the English general Constable Talbot. The estate is famous for its large, contiguous vineyard on a plateau of fine gravel, which provides excellent drainage and a distinct mineral character. In the 2022 vintage, Talbot has produced a wine of remarkable density and poise. Under the guidance of Jean-Michel Laporte, the estate benefited from its old vines—some over 50 years old—which were able to tap into deep water reserves during the summer drought. The 2022 is a sophisticated evolution for the property, moving toward a more precise and "chiseled" style while retaining the generous, approachable charm that has made Talbot a staple for collectors worldwide.
Tasting Notes:
A deep, lustrous purple in the glass. The nose is quintessential Saint-Julien, offering a fragrant mix of blackcurrants, black cherries, and crème de cassis, layered with notes of cedar, pencil shavings, and a touch of liquorice. On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with a core of succulent, ripe fruit. The tannins are impressively polished and ripe—a hallmark of the 2022 vintage—providing a structured yet velvety mouthfeel. A refreshing seam of acidity leads to a long, savoury finish with hints of black tea and tobacco.
Pairs elegantly with classic Bordeaux accompaniments like herb-crusted lamb, slow-roasted beef brisket, or a rich venison stew. It also works wonderfully with earthy dishes such as wild mushroom pasta or a selection of aged cheeses like Cantal or 24-month Comté.
